Basic Guitar Course

Guitar Courses for Children and Adolescents
The guitar has always been one of the most beloved instruments among children and adolescents. The Scuola di Musica di Fiesole offers a fun and rewarding guitar course for children (ages 5/6 and up) and adolescents. Initially centered around playful activities, the course encourages listening, coordination, and imitation.
Expressing oneself through a musical instrument is a dream for many children and adolescents, and the guitar in particular creates an intimate connection with the player while also acting as a medium for communication and sharing with others.
The three levels of the guitar course guide students from an introduction to the instrument to the study of increasingly complex music. The skills acquired are validated through exams, and upon completing the pre-academic guitar course, students may continue in an academic guitar study program.
For those who wish to learn guitar without pursuing certification, the school also offers a non-curricular guitar course, with no certification but with the same high-quality standards.
The introduction to the instrument is the first activity, explaining its structure, parts, how sound is produced, and the proper way to hold the guitar. By imitating the teacher’s movements students learn the distinct roles of each hand, and by listening to the guitar’s various sounds they begin training their ear.
New students also participate in group activities, such as the introductory theory class and the Children’s choral workshop, where they engage with concepts like sound, silence, duration, and pitch through games that enhance their ability to produce sound, motor coordination, and interaction with peers.
Young guitarists play together from the beginning, first with the teacher’s guidance, then in small guitar ensembles with fellow students.
The guitar course for children and adolescents continues to explore the instrument’s capabilities, moving from simple, monophonic compositions to two-voice pieces. By studying music suited to their skill level, students gradually build agility, precision and the ability to expressively shape their performances with phrasing and sound quality.
Regular attendance in guitar lessons is essential for consolidating knowledge and skills. Equally important is daily individual practice, where students follow the teacher’s advice to apply what they have been taught and play with increasing confidence and awareness.
Developing practical and theoretical guitar skills enables students to approach more interesting and complex music.
The pre-academic guitar course progresses through various stages, during which teachers provide consistent support and encourage student dedication.
The skills acquired at each level are assessed through certification exams, allowing students to progress from the basic to the intermediate and then advanced levels. Each level includes complementary courses as outlined in the curriculum, which covers chamber music activities and group lessons on music theory and writing.
Upon completing this guitar study program, students will have the training necessary to tackle increasingly challenging repertoires, potentially leading to enrollment in an academic study program.
Outside of the structured curriculum, it is also possible to take guitar lessons in a non-curricular course, which, while adhering to the school’s quality standards, does not include performance exams.
Playing in public is not only a fundamental part of a musician’s growth but also a highly enriching experience for all children and adolescents. For this reason, the school organizes recitals, concerts, and various performance opportunities involving guitar students, both individually and in small ensembles.
To make the introduction to the instrument more natural, it is recommended that students attend preparatory courses before starting the guitar course. These include:
- Music courses for ages 0-6 (Musicami, based on E. Gordon’s Music Learning Theory)
- Rhythm-choral activities (ages 3-9).
