Established in 2017 in collaboration with the Sonoria Youth Cultural Centre located in District 4 of the City of Florence, the Isolotto Big Band currently holds its activities at the Barsanti Comprehensive Institute - Eduardo De Filippo Primary School. The program offers children a free, high-quality music course based on the practice of ensemble music with wind and percussion instruments, typical of band tradition.
By means of group lessons, immediate use of instruments and ensemble work, the children learn how to cooperate with one another in a positive manner and through discovery of their own creative potential. Involvement in team play is the founding principle of the course activities, aimed at inspiring joint learning while respecting the characteristics of each individual.
Between 2020 and early 2021, together with the Sorgane orchestra program and a few very young quartets enrolled at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, the Isolotto Big Band performed original music by Davide Fensi for the short film Il Paese senza errori – a tribute to Gianni Rodari on the 100th anniversary of his birth. The project was awarded funding by the CR Bank Foundation of Florence following a call for proposals entitled Cultural Participation 2019.
Organized in small groups due to the pandemic, the course can also take place online, if necessary. Online tools include video tutorials for assembly/disassembly of instruments, exercises to develop manual skills and musical writing, audio and video recordings illustrating the various instrumental sections of the band, games summarizing curriculum subjects, and music videos developed to accompany children in their discovery of the art of sounds.
Oumoulkhairy Carroy is curator of the course curriculum implemented by teachers Giada Moretti, Filippo Daga and Yulien Ciobanu.
