Basic Accordion Courses

Accordion Courses for Children and Adolescents
The accordion course at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is designed for children (starting at age 7 or 8) and adolescents, offering a structured and personalized learning path that allows students to explore and discover music through the accordion, a wind instrument with an impressive expressive potential.
The course begins with weekly individual accordion lessons and includes group ensemble experiences from the start.
Students can learn the accordion through group lessons within the Suoninsieme program, which is especially suited to children and adolescents with no prior musical knowledge, or through a pre-academic accordion course with weekly individual lessons.
The accordion curriculum at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is divided into three levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced), with certification exams at the end of each module; alternatively, students aged 11 and up may opt for a non-curricular course, which does not require exams.
The curriculum also includes public performance experiences (concerts, recitals, etc.), which the school considers essential to young musiciansโ growth.
Students can begin learning the accordion at age 7 or 8, with a gradual introduction to foundational elements like proper instrument positioning, body and arm posture, coordination, movement synchronization, and hand placement.
The parts of the accordion are presented and explained, and students start to produce their first sounds on the instrument through simple, practical exercises that follow the teacherโs demonstration.
Several approaches to learning the accordion are available, tailored to age and any previous experience:
- Suoninsieme (group accordion lessons for beginners with no prior experience);
- Pre-academic accordion courses with individual lessons.
The pre-academic accordion course curriculum consists of three levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced). At the end of each module students take certification exams, which allow them to advance to the next level. Complementary courses outlined in the study plan are also part of each module.
Students aged 11 and up may also take accordion lessons in an non-curricular course, which does not require exams.
The Scuola di Musica di Fiesole considers public performance a fundamental part of musical education and development. From the first level of the accordion course, students participate in concerts, recitals, and various performance opportunities organized by the school.
To help students transition smoothly into the accordion course, the school recommends two preparatory paths, tailored by age: Musicami, a music course for children ages 0 to 6 (based on Edwin Gordonโs Music Learning Theory), and rhythmic-choral activities for children ages 3 to 9.
