Three-year Academic Baroque Cello Program

The Three-year academic Baroque cello program at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is an advanced study course that allows young musicians to obtain the First-level Academic Diploma in Higher Artistic and Musical Education (AFAM), equivalent to a bachelorโ€™s degree.
Baroque cello students at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole acquire the skills necessary to approach the Baroque repertoire in accordance with Baroque performance practice principles, including the setup and tuning of the cello as well as bow techniques.
The technical-instrumental component is complemented by theoretical knowledge related to the historical context of the Baroque repertoire and the evolution of compositional and analytical models, with a particular focus on early music.
The Baroque cello program also includes the study of improvisation, music technology, and a second EU language.
Students in the Three-year academic Baroque cello program participate in numerous concerts organized by the school, further consolidating the skills they have acquired.

The educational offering at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole for Baroque cello students is particularly enriched by the activities of the Department of Early Music, led by a team of expert teachers, and further enhanced by a calendar of seminars and meetings with leading musicians and authors.

Students in the Three-year Baroque cello program can travel to various European countries for a study period abroad and can benefit from the presence of distinguished foreign professors at the school, thanks to the Erasmus+ program, which allows the school to establish partnerships with major music institutions within the European Union.
With the Swiss-European Mobility Programme (SEMP), the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole partners with Switzerlandโ€™s leading music institutions, enabling advanced Baroque cello students to arrange mobility experiences with these prestigious schools.

During the program, Baroque cello students gain fundamental ensemble practice experience with the Camerata Strumentale Fiesolana, an orchestral ensemble dedicated to Baroque repertoire, and with chamber music groups.
Studying with peers provides essential opportunities for individual growth and peer learning, while orchestral activities allow students to engage with the Baroque ensemble repertoire under the guidance of experienced teacher-conductors.

Recitals, open rehearsals, and concerts involve Baroque cello students and serve as opportunities to test their preparation and foster musical and personal growth. The Scuola di Musica di Fiesole places significant importance on these experiences.

The Three-year Baroque cello program opens up various employment opportunities for AFAM graduates, including:

  • Solo instrumentalist
  • Chamber ensemble instrumentalist
  • Instrumentalist in Baroque orchestras
  • Instrumentalist in Baroque music theater ensembles
  • Instrumentalist in string orchestras
