Basic Trumpet Course

Trumpet Courses for Children and Adolescents
The trumpet courses for children and adolescents at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole teach students to express themselves with this captivating brass instrument, known for its distinctive, powerful sound, which can range from soft and melancholic to bold and brilliant.
These trumpet lessons are designed to be accessible to students with no prior musical experience and, consistent with the schoolโs educational approach, include group courses (such as chamber music groups and the S-bandiamo! ensemble) from the start, allowing even novices to experience the joy of playing music together.
The trumpet course at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is divided into three levels, each concluded with exams certifying the skills achieved, enabling students to perform increasingly challenging trumpet pieces. For those who are interested, it also serves as a preparation for enrollment into an academic trumpet course. Alternatively, students aged 11 and older can opt for a non-curricular trumpet course, which does not include exams.
In the trumpet course for children and adolescents, an innovative teaching approach introduces the instrument through playful activities.
Students start by learning the structure and parts of the trumpet, become familiar with using the mouthpiece, and learn how to produce sound through proper breathing (correct use and increase in lung capacity), focusing on sound quality (starting with intonation, followed by flexibility and dynamics), posture, and gradually acquiring the necessary technical skills to play the trumpet.
Students can begin trumpet lessons, even with no prior musical experience, in two formats: a two-year group trumpet course with peers (Suoninsieme) or an individual trumpet course.
In both cases, students attend Cantare il solfeggio group lessons, an introductory music theory course where they learn the concepts of sound, silence, duration, and pitch through games that enhance sound-making, motor coordination, and interaction with peers. The same collective approach is applied in the initial orchestra experiences, where children learn to play together.
Progress in the trumpet course, supported by regular individual practice, enables students to play pieces suited to their level and refine their technique, improving breathing and sound control through specific exercises, as well as developing ease in movement and correct posture. As they gain agility, precision, and power, trumpet students also receive guidance from teachers on managing performance anxiety.
These advancements allow students to participate in Fiesole Harmonie, chamber music groups, and ultimately the Youth Orchestra.
In the pre-academic trumpet course, teachers provide consistent support and encourage both individual and collective commitment. As students progressively acquire practical and theoretical skills, they can tackle increasingly interesting and complex pieces.
The trumpet course syllabus is divided into three levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) and includes complementary courses (chamber music, music theory, etc.) with certification exams at each level to verify the skills achieved.
At the end of this study path, trumpet students will have the necessary foundation to tackle more demanding repertoires, and, if suitably prepared, may apply to an academic trumpet course. For those aged 11 and older, the school also offers a non-curricular trumpet course, which does not include exams.
The teaching philosophy at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole emphasizes the importance of public performances. These experiences, essential for every musician and especially valuable for children and adolescents, are offered through various performance opportunities (concerts, recitals, etc.) that engage trumpet students individually, in small ensembles, or as part of an orchestra from the very beginning of their studies.
Prior to starting the trumpet course for children and adolescents, the school recommends two preparatory options depending on the studentโs age: Musicami, a music course for children aged 0-6 (based on the Music Learning Theory by E. Gordon), or rhythmic-choral activities for children aged 3-9.
