Basic jazz piano Course

Jazz piano courses for children and adolescents
The piano is essential in jazz, and allows musicians to explore the genreโs repertoire, to test their improvisational skills ad creativity and to express themselves both solo and in ensembles.
In order to be able to do so, it is essential to follow a specific course of study, which the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole offers with its basic jazz piano course. It is ideal for children and adolescents who wish to engage with jazz through the piano, taking advantage of the vibrant activities and expert teachers of the schoolโs Jazz department.
Students of the jazz piano course begin by becoming familiar with sound and rhythm and then proceeed, under the teacherโs guidance, to work on an increasingly complex jazz repertoire. Initially musical pieces are reproduced through imitation, but as the course progresses through its three levels, the focus of the jazz piano lessons shifts toward improvisation skills, both individually and as part of an ensemble.
Recitals and concerts, organized by the school as a regular activity for all students, are an essential part of the jazz piano course for children and adolescents.
The jazz piano course for children and adolescents begins by teaching the fundamentals of instrumental technique. However, studying the jazz piano also requires developing perceptual, memorization and music reading skills, which progress together throughout the course.
At the beginning of the course teachers guide students to focus on sound and rhythm. Initially simple musical phrases are reproduced through imitation, in a gradual discovery of the jazz pianoโs expressive potential.
While it allows students to increase their piano-playing skills in terms of agility and rhythmic complexity, the jazz piano course for children and adolescents also accompanies them in the study of the most representative repertoire by delving into the stylistic and formal aspects of jazz music.
As the studentโs skills increase โ thanks to the attendance of jazz piano lessons and the necessary daily individual practice โ more complex pieces are tackled and the organisational, compositional and analytical models of the jazz repertoire are examined.
The teacher guides students through active listening, helping them absorb the jazz language in a non-mechanical way. An essential part of the course is the introduction to improvisation, which is practiced first in small ensembles and eventually in large ensembles.
The jazz piano course also includes complementary classes (ensemble music, ear training, improvisation techniques, harmony, and jazz history) and is structured into three levels.
This study path prepares jazz piano students to tackle increasingly challenging repertoires, potentially leading them to academic music programs.
The Scuola di Musica di Fiesole organizes concerts, recitals, and musical events for jazz piano students, which represent a key part of their education. These events serve as opportunities to verify and share studentsโ work, while also fostering personal growth through solo and ensemble performances in public settings.
