SuonInsieme: a music course for beginners with shared lessons

The SuonInsieme program of the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is a two-year beginner music course based on shared instrument lessons in small groups (maximum 4 children), grouped by age. Groups are formed according to the applications received.

The choice of instruments varies depending on the children’s age and the teachers’ evaluations. For younger children, the following programs are available: piano + percussion, violin, viola, cello, double bass, and harp.

The shared lessons of the SuonInsieme program offer numerous advantages to students, proving to be more effective and rewarding both in terms of learning—facilitated by imitation, repetition, and positive comparison—and from arelational perspective. The shared educational path encourages stronger bonds among students and families, while also reducing the individual burden of responsibility. Students enrolled in the SuonInsieme program also take part in the children’s ensembles organized by the School: Orchestra Micromusici, Orchestra Piccolissimi Musici, and S-bandiamo!.

The beginner music course of the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is aimed at children and young people with no prior instrumental experience. The age ranges are indicative and always subject to the evaluation of the teachers of each instrument:

  • from age 5 (up to a maximum of 7 years) for piano + percussion*
  • from age 5 for violin, viola, cello, double bass, and harp;
  • from age 6 for trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, and horn;
  • from age 7/8 for flute, oboe, and accordion;
  • from age 8/9 for bassoon

* For the piano + percussion course, 3 places are available, with the possibility of a waiting list.

The benefits of shared music lessons are numerous. In particular, a beginner music course based on shared lessons:

  • offers proven educational effectiveness, with significant results in terms of emotional engagement, listening skills, and motivation;
  • fosters bonds among students and with their families, who benefit from greater opportunities for mutual support and exchange;
  • achieves educational objectives through imitation, repetition, and positive comparison, with a reduced individual responsibility and a more rewarding overall experience.

The SuonInsieme beginner music course of the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is structured as follows:

1st year

  • one weekly collective instrument lesson (shared by 2–4 children);
  • one weekly collective lesson of singing solfège or choir, depending on age;
  • one monthly lesson with Orchestra Micromusici (for strings, accordion, and harp) or S-bandiamo! (for wind instruments).

2nd year

  • one weekly collective instrument lesson (shared by 2–4 children);
  • one weekly individual instrument lesson;
  • one weekly collective lesson of singing solfège or choir, depending on age;
  • one weekly lesson with Orchestra Micromusici (for piano + percussion), Orchestra Piccolissimi Musici (for strings, accordion, and harp), or S-bandiamo! (for wind instruments).

Singing solfège is a collective course in basic music literacy, taught in a simple and engaging way through singing, followed by an introduction to music reading.

Yes, having an instrument is necessary in order to practice at home. During the initial lessons, teachers provide families with all the necessary guidance for purchasing or renting instruments.

To enroll a child in the SuonInsieme course of the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, the dedicated application form must be completed by 10 September.

Group formation depends on the number of enrolled students. Each group may include children with up to a two-year age difference. To expand organizational possibilities and increase admission opportunities, families are asked to indicate a first-choice instrument and a second-choice instrument.

After a group orientation meeting led by the teachers, the groups are formed with the enrolled children.

Students of the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole who wish to continue studying their instrument are guided toward the School’s basic courses, which include individual lessons and attendance of complementary subjects, including children’s orchestras and later chamber music.
