The Scuola di Musica di Fiesole’s beginner music course is intended for children and young people with no previous instrumental experience (the age ranges are indicative and are always subject to the assessment of the teachers of the different instruments):

• from the age of 5 (up to a maximum age of 7) for piano + percussion*;
• from the age of 5 for violin, viola, cello, double bass and harp;
• from the age of 6 for for trumpet, saxophone, clarinet and French horn;
• from the age of 7/8 for flute, oboe, and accordion;
• from the age of 8/9 for bassoon

* for the piano + percussion course, there are 3 places available, with the possibility of a waiting list.

The advantages of shared music lessons involving several students are numerous. In particular, a beginner music course based on shared lessons:

• has a proven educational value, with significant results in terms of emotional engagement, listening and motivation;
• fosters relationships between students and also between their families, who have more opportunities to support and exchange experiences with one another;
• achieves educational objectives through imitation, repetition and positive comparison, with less individual responsibility and therefore a more rewarding experience.

The Scuola di Musica di Fiesole’s SuonInsieme beginner music course is structured as follows:

1st year

• one weekly shared instrumental lesson (for groups of 2–4 children);
• one weekly group lesson in “Cantare il solfeggio” or choir, depending on age;
• one monthly lesson with the MicroMusici Orchestra (for strings, accordion and harp) or  S-bandiamo! (for wind instruments).

2nd year

• one weekly shared instrumental lesson (for groups of 2–4 children);
• one weekly individual instrumental lesson;
• one weekly group lesson in “Cantare il solfeggio” or choir, depending on age;
• one weekly lesson with the MicroMusici Orchestra (for piano + percussion), the Piccolissimi Musici Orchestra (for strings, accordion and harp) or S-bandiamo! (for wind instruments).

“Cantare il solfeggio” is a collective music literacy course, which is simple and enjoyable and begins with singing, followed by an introduction to music reading.

Yes, having an instrument is necessary in order to practise at home as well. During the first lessons, the teachers provide families with all the information they need about purchasing or hiring instruments.

To enrol a child in the SuonInsieme course at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, the enrolment form  form must be completed by 10 September.

The formation of groups depends on the number of students enrolled. Members of each group may be up to two years apart in age. To broaden organisational opportunities and ensure greater access, families are asked to indicate one instrument as their first choice and one as their second choice.

Following a group orientation interview conducted by the teachers, the groups are formed from among the children enrolled.

Students at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole who wish to continue studying their instrument are directed towards the School’s basic courses, which include individual lessons and complementary subjects, including children’s orchestras and, subsequently, chamber music.
