The jazz trumpet and brass course at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is aimed at children and adolescents and is part of the school’s vibrant Jazz department.
The trumpet and other brass instruments used in jazz have a sweet, yet powerful sound. The jazz trumpet and brass lessons for children and adolescents offer an effective study path that includes individual trumpet (or another brass instrument) lessons, theoretical classes, and ensemble activities. From the very beginning, students have the opportunity to play with others.
Active listening is the key teaching method used by teachers to guide students in the course of jazz trumpet and brass studies and to start to fully understand the jazz language. In time, students can tackle increasingly complex pieces and acquire essential improvisation skills, both individually and in group performances.
The jazz trumpet and brass course for children and adolescents begins by teaching the fundamentals of instrumental technique, starting with proper posture and breathing exercises to improve sound production and agility. As these skills develop, students also improve their perceptual abilities and learn to memorize simple instrumental pieces.
Through regular attendance of the jazz trumpet and brass lessons and daily individual practice, students gradually improve their agility and rhythmic complexity, allowing them to play more challenging pieces.
Teachers guide students in active listening, helping them absorb the jazz language in a conscious, non-mechanical way. An essential part of the trumpet and brass jazz course is improvisation, practiced solo, in small ensembles and up to a large ensembles.
The trumpet and brass jazz course is structured into three levels and covers not only the stylistic and formal aspects of jazz brass instruments but also complementary subjects such as ensemble music, basic piano, ear training, improvisation techniques, harmony, and jazz history.
Playing music with others from the very beginning is a cornerstone of the teaching philosophy at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole. For jazz trumpet and brass students, as for all courses, the school organizes concerts, recitals, and musical events that are crucial in their musical experience, while also providing opportunities for students to review and share their work.
