Double Bass Second-Level Degree (Two-Year Course)

Two-Year Double Bass Program for the Second-Level AFAM Diploma
The advanced double bass program at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is designed for young bassists who have already earned a First-level AFAM Diploma and wish to obtain a Second-level AFAM Diploma, equivalent to a masterโs degree and aligned with European academic standards.
The curriculum of the two-year double bass academic program is personalized to highlight each studentโs unique strengths while equipping them with the technical and cultural knowledge necessary to develop an original and mature interpretative approach. It explores a broad repertoire, spanning from Baroque to contemporary works.
Throughout the program, students refine their instrumental technique โ enhancing agility, sound quality and bowing skills โ while acquiring advanced technical expertise and performance competence. The numerous performance opportunities offered by the school serve as an invaluable platform for students to test their artistic maturity.
Specialized training in double bass performance practices is supported by the schoolโs Early Music Department and courses in contemporary performance techniques. These resources enable students to master the interpretative nuances of different historical periods and develop improvisational skills relevant to various musical styles.
As part of Orchestra Galilei โ the ensemble comprising students from the schoolโs advanced programs โ young double bassists gain extensive ensemble experience through various artistic projects focused on orchestral repertoire, while smaller chamber groups allow them to explore chamber music performance. To prepare for professional orchestral careers, the curriculum also includes simulated auditions, providing a practical foundation for entrance exams in professional ensembles.
The Scuola di Musica di Fiesole hosts masterclasses by distinguished international bassists and teachers. In addition to double bass masterclasses, students can broaden their technical and artistic skills by participating in the schoolโs extensive offering of advanced courses in various musical disciplines.
Through the Erasmus+ and SEMP, students can enrich their education with study experiences abroad, either in Europe or Switzerland. These exchange programs also bring guest professors from prestigious international institutions to teach at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole.
The school organizes numerous concert opportunities for its students, held both at Villa La Torraccia and in various venues throughout Florence.
The most outstanding double bass students, as determined by faculty and the Artistic Director, will be invited to participate in exclusive performances. These events are organized in collaboration with music association and institutions in Italy, including the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, Fondazione William Walton in Ischia, Amici della Musica di Firenze, Societร Umanitaria in Milan, and the International Music Campus in Latina.
