Two-Year Piano Program for the AFAM Second-Level Diploma
Thanks to the presence of internationally renowned concert pianists with extensive experience in music education, the Two-year Academic Piano Program at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole offers a high-level educational path leading to the AFAM Second-level Academic Diploma (equivalent to a master’s degree).
The program focuses on broadening the repertoire and developing performance awareness through the refinement of instrumental technique, including agility, cantabile playing, clarity, power, sound production, and the use of proper postural and gestural techniques for key attack and pedaling.
The study plan for the Two-year Academic Piano Program also includes theoretical subjects, such as history and analysis of compositional forms and repertoires, musical semiography, and a second European language.
Participation in the numerous public concerts organized by the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is considered an integral part of the program, providing students with valuable performance experience to assess their progress.
The Two-year Academic Piano Program at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole focuses on the specialized study of performance practices, including those related to historical instruments, as well as the history of interpretation.
Students gain all the necessary tools to develop a personal and stylistically coherent piano interpretation through thorough preparation of key piano repertoire works from the 18th century to the present day, while also exploring improvisation techniques.
By the end of the Second-level Academic Diploma in Piano, students will have acquired the knowledge, skills, and expertise to independently realize their artistic projects, achieving high artistic and professional standards.
Ensemble performance provides an opportunity for collaborative musical interaction, and the specific focus of the curriculum on chamber music includes in-depth study of piano duos, instrumental ensembles with piano, lied repertoire, and concertos with orchestra, as well as accompaniment practice.
Masterclasses held by prestigious international concert artists enhance and complement the training of students in the two-year academic programs at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole.
The Two-year Academic Piano Program also benefits from these advanced lessons, which cover piano performance as well as other instruments.
The Two-year Academic Piano Program offers students the opportunity to participate in Erasmus+ programs across Europe or in SEMP programs in Switzerland, allowing them to spend study periods abroad.
Additionally, the presence of distinguished foreign professors at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, as part of these exchange programs, further enriches the students’ educational experience.
The Scuola di Musica di Fiesole organizes concerts at Villa La Torraccia and other venues in Florence and beyond, where the most talented students from the Two-year Academic Piano Program – selected at the sole discretion of faculty and the Artistic Director – are invited to perform.
Additional performance opportunities are available through collaborations with musical associations and major institutions across Italy, including Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, Fondazione William Walton di Ischia, Amici della Musica di Firenze, Società Umanitaria di Milano, Campus Internazionale di Musica di Latina.

Young pianists who hold a First-Level AFAM Diploma or the pre-reform Diploma (V.O.), along with a High School Diploma.
