Basic Composition Courses

Composition Courses
The goal of the composition courses at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is to develop musical creativity through tools like the analysis of the classical repertoire, progressive skill-building in various historical styles and the creation of original compositions. Targeted at adolescents and young musicians, the course offers students an engaging pathway rich in growth opportunities.
The composition course includes both individual lessons and group sessions, structured across three levels (basic, intermediate, advanced), each concluding with a certification exam to verify the competencies acquired.
Beginning with fundamental melodic and harmonic processes, composition lessons gradually enable students to acquire compositional techniques in various forms, also introducing them to leading software for score writing, such as Finale and Sibelius.
The school also organizes public performance opportunities and events, like the Veretti Prize, a concert-competition that rewards the most promising composition projects.
Composition lessons start by introducing fundamental concepts of formal structure and the simplest melodic and harmonic processes. Initial sound experiments are notated through piano writing, with students also beginning to use graphic software to create musical scores, such as Finale and Sibelius.
The course provides comprehensive training in harmony and counterpoint, solid knowledge of traditional orchestration and the foundational forms of the repertoire, delivered through individual lessons and group sessions. A consistent, attentive participation in composition lessons allows for gradual acquisition of compositional techniques in various forms, including methods for arranging and transcription, up to electronic music, and music for visual media.
The goal of the composition courseโs educational pathway is to complete the training modules โ basic, intermediate, and advanced levels โ by passing certification exams and by attending the complementary courses included in the curriculum.
The school considers a key component of the program the production of student works, intended for public performance at events organized for this purpose, starting with the Veretti prize, an annual concert-competition that rewards the most interesting composition projects by offering new commission opportunities.
