Two-Year Orchestral Training Program for the AFAM Second-Level Diploma
The Two-year Academic Orchestral Training Program at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole enables young musicians to obtain the Second-level Academic Diploma in Higher Artistic and Musical Education (AFAM), equivalent to a master’s degree.
Among its key objectives, the Two-year Academic Orchestral Training Program focuses on understanding orchestral discipline and dynamics, as well as on deepening the knowledge of excerpts from symphonic and operatic works most frequently required in competitions. The program also addresses the psychological aspects of group dynamics, essential for professional orchestral performance.
By the end of the two-year program, students will have acquired specialist knowledge and skills that allow them to both realize their artistic projects independently and contribute to the planning of musical events and performances.
The orchestral training curriculum provides a high-level educational path, equipping students with ensemble performance skills spanning from early music to contemporary works.
Students also refine their instrumental technique through individual lessons, while gaining specialized knowledge in performance practices – including those related to historical instruments – and interpretation history.
Ensemble music, a core focus of the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, plays a central role in the Two-year Academic Orchestral Training Program.
Students develop an in-depth understanding of conductor gestures and ensemble playing approaches, combining chamber music study with the enhancement of individual instrumental skills.
In addition to the courses included in the orchestral training curriculum, students can further enrich their education by attending masterclasses held by internationally renowned faculty and concert artists. These advanced training opportunities are organized annually by the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole.
Students in the orchestral training program can spend study periods abroad through the Erasmus+ and SEMP (for Switzerland) programs.
Additionally, they have the chance to attend lessons by prestigious foreign professors at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, benefiting from the same exchange opportunities offered to international faculty.
At the sole discretion of the faculty and the Artistic Director, the most outstanding orchestral training students are invited to perform in concerts organized by the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole in collaboration with renowned musical institutions (Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, Fondazione William Walton di Ischia, Amici della Musica di Firenze, Società Umanitaria di Milano, Campus Internazionale di Musica di Latina), and held both at Villa La Torraccia and other major venues in Florence.

Young instrumentalists who hold a First-Level AFAM Diploma or the pre-reform Diploma (V.O.), along with a High School Diploma.
