Saxophone Second-Level Degree (Two-Year Course)

Two-Year Saxophone Program for the AFAM Second-Level Diploma
Saxophonists who have completed the three-year program with a First-level Academic Diploma (or equivalent qualification) and wish to develop their artistic personality by acquiring further and specialized skills can enroll in the Two-year Academic Saxophone Program with an interpretative focus at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole.
The academic saxophone course allows young musicians to obtain the Second-level Academic Diploma in Higher Artistic and Musical Education (AFAM), equivalent to a masterโs degree.
The Two-year Academic Saxophone Program with an interpretative focus primarily aims to enhance the unique strengths of each student, ensuring they become professional performers who are well-prepared and aware of their career choices.
To encourage originality in each studentโs repertoire, the two-year saxophone program also includes in-depth study of lesser-known composers and compositions.
To achieve the educational objectives of the two-year interpretative saxophone program, students will explore technical aspects and develop a mature awareness of the musical process. This is achieved through tools such as deep understanding of harmonic language, focus on dynamics and tempo nuances, and knowledge of performance practices for the various instruments in the saxophone family.
Preparation for specific exams allows each saxophone student to delve into different aspects of the instrument and identify their strengths, including solo performance, orchestral practice, chamber music with related instruments (saxophone quartet), experimentation with other instruments, repertoire study, and exploration of different musical genres.
The educational approach at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole promotes ensemble music in all its forms as an essential element in every musicianโs training. A fundamental part of the Second-level Academic Saxophone Program is public performance, with students regularly participating in concerts, multimedia productions, and the creation of musical narratives.
Renowned international teachers and performers hold advanced masterclasses at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, aimed at students of the two-year academic programs. Students in the interpretative saxophone program can attend not only saxophone masterclasses but also any other lessons useful for enriching their artistic and professional development.
Students in the interpretative saxophone program have the opportunity to study abroad in various European countries through the Erasmus+ program or in Switzerland through SEMP. At the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, they can also benefit from the presence of renowned foreign professors who participate in exchanges under these programs.
At Villa La Torraccia, as well as at other musical institutions in Florence and across Italy, the most talented saxophone students (selected at the sole discretion of faculty and the Artistic Director) are invited to perform in concerts organized by the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole.
Additional performance opportunities arise through collaborations with musical associations and major institutions across Italy, including Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, Fondazione William Walton di Ischia, Amici della Musica di Firenze, Societร Umanitaria di Milano, Campus Internazionale di Musica di Latina.
The Second-Level Academic Saxophone Program is authorized by the Italian Ministry of Education, University, and Research (MIUR) under Ministerial Decree No. n. 1503 of 14/11/2023 (pdf Decreto)
