Viola da Gamba Course for Adolescents and Adults
The Scuola di Musica di Fiesole offers a viol course for adolescents and adults, allowing students to explore music from the 16th to the 18th century with this stringed instrument which was very popular from the Renaissance to the late Baroque period and has been revived in recent decades, captivating musicians and enthusiasts alike.
This course combines weekly individual viola da gamba lessons with extensive group experiences, including choral practice and participation in a viol consort and other early music ensembles. This aligns with the school’s educational approach, which values performance as a formative experience.
The didactic approach to the viola da gamba lessons emphasizes developing students’ musical sensitivity alongside technical skills on the instrument. At the end of each of the three training modules forming the course students undergo proficiency exams.
Alternatively, students may enroll in a non-curricular course that does not require exams.
The Scuola di Musica di Fiesole’s viola da gamba course provides students with a rapid introduction to high-quality music through an innovative teaching method that merges technical mastery and musical sensitivity in a unique, integrated path. While minimizing arid technical studies, the course encourages students to cultivate an appreciation for quality music early on.
The program is divided into foundational, intermediate, and advanced modules (which, along with complementary courses, form the pre-academic viola da gamba study plan). Each level culminates in certification exams to verify acquired skills.
As an alternative, the Scuola also offers a non-curricular course without exams.but which still adheres to its demanding standards.
Public performance is a core element in the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole’s educational approach, viewed as an essential experience for all students. viola da gamba students participate in a range of performance events, such as concerts and recitals, organized by the Scuola from the early stages of the course.
