Flute Courses for Children and Adolescents

The delicate and captivating sound of theflute is an excellent entry point into the wonderful world of music: the flute courses at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole teach children and adolescents to play the flute with an educational approach that balances enjoyment and discipline.
Flute lessons are complemented, from the beginning and in line with the schoolโ€™s educational approach, by group courses such as the S-bandiamo! ensemble and chamber groups, where beginners live the fundamental experience of playing together with others.

Children and adolescents with no prior musical experience can also learn to play theflute, choosing between individual flute lessons and the Suoninsieme path, a two-year program of flute group lessons shared with peers
The flute course guides students through various levels of competence, developing technical skills and introducing increasingly complex musical pieces: once an adequate level of preparation is reached, students may take entrance exams for academic flute study.

The flute course for children and adolescents begins with an introduction to the instrument, explaining its structure, parts and sound production. The teaching of flute at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole follows an innovative approach, promoting early engagement with the instrument and gradually introducing fundamental elements of technique, including breathing (correct use and increase in lung capacity), sound quality (starting with intonation, later focusing on flexibility and dynamics), proper posture and instrumental technique, such as finger positioning on keys to produce sounds of varying pitch.

From the start, expression and musicality are nurtured, with attention to phrasing, dynamics and tone color.

Flute lessons can begin in two formats: students with no previous musical experience may start with the Suoninsieme path, a two-year program of shared flute lessons with peers, or, for those with some prior knowledge, they may choose the individual flute lesson course.

In both cases, students participate in group activities, such as the introductory theory course, Cantare il solfeggio, where they gain familiarity with concepts of sound, silence, duration and pitch through games that foster sound-thinking and production skills, motor coordination and peer interaction.

The same happens in initial orchestra experiences, where children learn to play together.

As students progress in flute study, students enhance their respiratory capacity and gain greater control over sound production through specific exercises, always emphasizing natural movement and correct posture with the instrument.

They develop agility and precision, tackling pieces suited to their level, and receive guidance on managing performance-related emotions.

Progress in instrumental skills opens up opportunities to join the Fiesole Harmonie ensemble, chamber groups, and finally the Youth Orchestra.

In addition to lessons, it is essential that the skills acquired are reinforced through regular individual practice.

The pre-academic flute course is structured to progressively build practical and theoretical skills, introducing more interesting and complex music. Throughout the pre-academic flute course, teachers provide support and encourage student commitment.

Skills are assessed through certification exams, allowing students to advance from the basic to intermediate and then advanced levels.

Each level requires attendance in complementary courses outlined in the study plan, which includes chamber music and group lessons on musical notation and theory.

Upon completing this course of study, students will have the training needed to tackle increasingly challenging repertoires, potentially leading to entry into an academic study program if their preparation is adequate.

Flute lessons are also available as part of a non-curricular course (minimum age 11), which does not include graded exams.

Concerts, recitals, and various performance initiatives involve flute students individually, in small ensembles, and in the orchestra. Public music performance is an essential part of a musicianโ€™s growth journey and a highly educational experience for all children and adolescents.

To facilitate a more natural introduction to the instrument, attendance in preparatory courses is recommended before beginning the flute course: Music course for ages 0 to 6 โ€“ Musicami (based on E. Gordonโ€™s Music Learning Theory) and rhythm-choral activities (ages 3-9).
