Basic Percussion Course

Percussion Course for Children and Adolescents
The percussion class at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole offers a broad curriculum that mirrors the vastness of the percussion world: percussion instruments appear across all music genres and cultures, representing a wide variety of types.
The percussion course combines group or individual percussion lessons with complementary activities such as choral practice, music theory classes, and participation in children and youth orchestras like Micromusici, Orchestra Piccolissimi Musici, and S-bandiamo!
The pre-academic percussion course is structured in three progressive levels, each covering the most important percussion instruments. Students begin with the drum and drum set, then add xylophone and timpani in the subsequent years, and finally explore vibraphone and marimba with the four-mallet technique in the last part of the course. Alternatively, students aged 11 and older can join a non-curricular percussion course without exams.
Percussion instruction at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole emphasizes a unique introductory approach, enabling children to start learning percussion instruments even at a preschool age, while gradually absorbing fundamental skills.
The percussion course provides various options based on age and prior experience. Beginning at age 5, children can join the shared SuonInsieme lessons, a โLaboratorio scopertaโ (Discovery workshop) with piano and percussion. Around age 8, students can enter the pre-academic courses, which begin with drum and drum set, followed by xylophone and timpani in subsequent years. The final pre-academic phase introduces vibraphone and marimba with four-mallet technique.
The pre-academic percussion course is organized into three modules: basic, intermediate, and advanced levels, each culminating in certification exams. The course also includes complementary subjects outlined in the curriculum.
Percussion lessons are also available through a non-curricular course for students 11 years and older, without exams.
The Scuola di Musica di Fiesoleโs educational philosophy emphasizes public performance as a core learning experience. Percussion students are encouraged to participate in concerts, recitals, and other performance events, which play a crucial role in their musical and personal development.
Before starting the percussion course, young children are recommended to join preparatory programs for a smoother transition to instruments. For very young children, Musicami, a music course for ages 0 to 6 based on E. Gordonโs Music Learning Theory, is available. Rhythm and choral activities are offered for children ages 3 to 9.
