A jazz drumming course for children and adolescents offers the opportunity to fully experience the joyful (and playful) immediacy of rhythmic pulse: for younger students, with their natural liveliness, the attraction to the instruments that make up the jazz drum set is instinctive.
Children and adolescents who wish to learn to play jazz drums will find in the jazz drumming course at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole an interesting and well-structured path to approach jazz music, as part of the school’s extensive Jazz department activities.
The jazz drumming lessons for children and adolescents – along with the essential individual study – enable students to gradually acquire the technical knowledge and basic skills needed to play solo and in ensembles, developing a personal language while becoming aware of the stylistic elements of jazz music. By enhancing instrumental technique and improvisation skills, the basic jazz drumming course develops the students’ perception of sound and of rhythmic structures, allowing them to gain a specific knowledge of the organizational, compositional, and analytical models of jazz music.
A solid understanding of basic technique is essential for beginning to play jazz drums with freedom of expression, and thus its fundamentals form the core of the jazz drumming course.
Students are guided in exploring the instruments that make up the jazz drum set, starting with refining their rhythmic perception: through imitation they reproduce simple sequences, while memory and reading progress alongside their performance abilities.
The basic jazz drumming course at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is divided into three progressive levels, determined by the curriculum.
Each level of the jazz drumming course presents a specific set of subjects, which together form a well-rounded and engaging program, with a study plan that involves 4 hours per week (first level) and 5 hours per week (second and third levels).
The skills provided by the jazz drumming course are enhanced by attending lessons and dedicating time to individual daily practice, in order to increase awareness of the stylistic and formal aspects of the examined repertoire.
Upon completing the three levels of the course, jazz drumming students will have followed a compehensive path that includes ensemble music, complementary piano, jazz choir, ear training, improvisation techniques, and studies in harmony and jazz history.
Jazz drumming students participate in the performance activities promoted by the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole: concerts and recitals – and more generally, all public performance initiatives – are a crucial moment to evaluate the work done during the basic jazz drumming course. The opportunity to make music together with others from the very start of the course also makes studying jazz drumming even more rewarding.
